Boar Hallmark (Paris, 1838–1962)
A striking antique French brooch featuring a finely carved neoclassical female portrait in relief, framed by a luminous surround of deep red close-backed garnets.
The central silver bust presents a classical woman with softly modeled features and upswept hair, reminiscent of 19th-century archaeological revival aesthetics. She is encircled by rich rose-cut garnets, each individually bezel-set in a silver mounting. The garnets are close-backed, enhancing their saturated crimson glow against the darkened ground.
The reverse is beautifully engraved and fitted with an early C-clasp, consistent with 19th-century construction. The brooch bears the French boar hallmark for silver (in use 1838–1962), confirming French origin.
A substantial and sculptural piece with wonderful presence and weight.
Details:
• Origin: France
• Metal: Silver (French boar hallmark)
• Stones: Close-backed garnets
